The Gordon Fund

Al GordonAlbert H. Gordon, known far and wide to all as “Al”, was one of the founders of The Trollope Society in London and then Founding Chairman of the New York Trollope Society, and it is he who made this Society possible. He came late to Trollope, and promptly fell in love with him, his works, and his world. Al started reading Trollope in his sixties and never stopped. He read right through the novels and upon reaching the last of them, promptly began again, always seeing more, and enjoying them more.

Mr. Gordon knew there needed to be a proper edition of the Complete Novels, and in close conjunction with John Letts, the originator of the idea, and founding Chairman of the London Trollope Society, made sure the project came to pass. Al was also able to participate in seeing Trollope admitted, in the form of a Memorial Stone to Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, which all Trollopians can now visit.

In the course of pursuing this love for Trollope, Al came to possess a complete set of First Editions, all inscribed by Trollope to his son Henry Merivale Trollope (except for the final novel, An Old Man’s Love, published posthumously). Mr. Gordon subsequently donated them to the Winchester College Library in England, where Trollope and his brother Tom had been students, as the most fitting possible resting place. In his Autobiography, Trollope tells us that the earliest manifestation of his writer’s imagination dated from those days. And incidentally, Winchester Cathedral and the associated St. Cross Hospital are likely settings and inspiration for the story told in The Warden.

Al passed away in 2009 at the age of 107 years, after a remarkable life well-lived.

Al’s devotion to Trollope’s work and life and to the preservation and growth of the reading world’s awareness, appreciation and knowledge of Trollope’s work, are a perfect example of the tireless dedication to any task he set himself. In memory of that and of his inspiring affection for Trollope and for his work, the Board of the Trollope Society American Branch created the Al Gordon Fund, where any Trollope enthusiasts may contribute to help perpetuate the work of this Society. All such donations in any amount are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible gifts to the Society.
