2018 Winter Reception: George Levine

“Trollope and Money and the New Version of The Duke’s Children is the title of our 2018 Winter Reception, to be delivered by Professor George Levine. This year’s Winter Reception of the Society will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018, at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 109 East 50th Street (the rear/side entrance, between Park and Lexington Avenues), New York, NY. Enter at the red double doors and take the elevator to the third floor, Room 33. The reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the talk to start at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per members and guests ($15 for current students and active or retired faculty members). We look forward to seeing many of our members, who are welcome to bring guests to this event. Note: Purchasers will not receive a physical ticket to the event, however your name will be added to the attendee list.

George LevineGeorge Levine is Professor Emeritus of Literature at Rutgers University.  He has written extensively about Victorian fiction, most importantly in The Realistic Imagination (1981), which includes Trollope in its study of Victorian realism Much of his later work has been on George Eliot and Charles Darwin in such books as Darwin and the Novelists (1988), which includes an extended treatment of Trollope’s narrative methods, Darwin Loves You (2006), Darwin the Writer (2011), and The Cambridge Companion to George Eliot (2001)  Other works include the recent Reading Thomas Hardy (2017) and Dying to Know (2002), along with a great many edited volumes on Victorian fiction, on secularism, and on literary criticism.  He has also written simply for the kind of pleasure Trollope took in fox hunting his adventures as a birder: Lifebirds (1994).  He has been editor of the journal, Victorian Studies, and he has won many academic awards, including Guggenheim, ACLS, and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships.  He has also been chair of the Rutgers English Department, and vice provost of the New Brunswick campus..
